Melting Pot

1. I apologize for blowwing up Twitter last night...the CMAs were just too much fun to take in and the girls and I were going back and forth--I was giggling so much Jeff thought I was going to lose it...scary man duet with Jennifer Nettles, awkward Scotty American Idol boy, sequins everywhere--including the men's outfits, and non-stop admiration for Carrie Underwood and her legs. I was loving a few of her looks though!
2. I want to be Matt Laurer--I am a nerd and have watched anxiously every morning this week for his "Where in the World?" series and I can't help but get uber excited when they reveal his location...so far, he's been to Namibia, Madrid, Malaysis, and Switzerland...racking up those frequent flyer miles. Wouldn't that be the life?
3. There are so many Friends and Family Sales going on this weekend... Loft, Gap, Restoration Hardware, Beauty.com--the list goes on and on! Helpful ways to save this holiday season for sure so be on the lookout!

4. Random, but important--I know I've had issues with commenting on some friends' blogs before and I think I figured out how to solve the problem...worked for me and a few others I told, so I thought why not pass the trick on:
Go to Settings--Comments--Comment Form Placement--Select Pop-Up Window
This should fix your problems and I promise more friends will be commenting!
5. I recently heard about an event called Small Business Saturday taking place on November 26. It's a day to dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping days of the year and I think this is such a great cause. The goal is to get millions of shoppers to shop at their favorite local stores to help fuel the economy...we can all do our part!

That's all I've got for this Thursday...2 weeks until Thanksgiving and my mind is swarming thinking of all the yummy dishes I want to make. I'm also working on my holiday wish list, a pregnancy "thus far" checklist and lessons learned, and a post to detail everything nursery. Ta ta for now!

Training and Top 2 Tuesday... Ticket to Ride and Blogging Lessons

I found inspiration for this post as Jeff and I were at the airport last week maneuvering to find something healthy to eat at the airport... as much as we're traveling this year I couldn't help but wonder, how can we try to eat healthy at the airports when we're constantly surrounded by Au Bon Pain, Brueger's Bagels, Panda Express, Chili's, TGI Friday's, and the plethora of other "convenient", but no so healthy restaurants.

For research, I started browing the world wide web for help beyond what I already know... I'm breaking it down by snacks to carry with you, places to eat while you're waiting, and other items to note.
Snacks to Pack or Buy at the Airport
  • Raw nuts
  • Fresh or dried fruit
  • Pretzels
  • Low-sugar granola bars/low-fat energy bars
  • Bottled water
Places to Eat, Meal Options, and Items to Order
  • If you must eat a bagel/pastry, avoid cream cheese and stick to jelly
  • For breakfast, stick to egg white omelets with loads of veggies, chow down on the oatmeal at a hotel continental breakfast, or go with a high-fiber/whole grain cereal
  • If the airport has a Subway, Quizno's, or other sub shop, stick to the lean proteins--turkey and chicken with vegetables, no heavy sauces, and choose wheat bread or flatbread
  • If you simply have to order pizza {and I know that feeling, trust me}, go with thin crust, cheese with veggies. Avoid the meat-lovers and stuffed crusts at all costs!
Other Tidbits of Necessary Information
  • Avoid getting sauce on your sandwich/entree--this can cut calories in a mjaor way
  • Bring your workout clothes with you and take a stroll if the weather is nice or check-out the hotel gym... I do this ALL the time!
  • Order a 1/2 portion or if you have a travel buddy, split an entree with them! Saves calories and $$
  • Drink plenty of water--when you think you're hungry, sometimes you're just thirsty so make sure to keep your body hydrated as much as possible
My apologies, as I haven't been talking "training" these past few weeks so I am back with some tips I just read via Shape, Self, and Women'e Health--obviously I had lots of time to read =).
This week, I am doing 3 days of cardio {30 minutes/3 miles}, interval training {fast bursts of speed mixed with slower longer paces to burn more calories}, and 3 workouts involving weights...for those that thing you bulk up with weight training, think again... mixing high reps with low weight helps you to stay lean and I have seen a noticable difference and it truly works!!

And now, venturing to another fun topic... Taylor's Top 2 Tuesday...
Top 2 Things I've Learned About Blogging
1. Don't be concerned with what people think... if you blog, I am quite certain you started based on what you wanted to write about, what interests you, and about your life. I hear of people getting tied up in the followers/friends/comments and to me, that's just not what it's about... I want to track my life so I can keep up with people and bookmark the exciting things as a digital scrapbook--so my advice: do this for you and no one else!
2. Let people contact you...on the contrary, the blogging world has introduced me to all kinds of people and great networking opportunities because of this little daily snapshot into my life. If you let people email you and post comments, fun friendships can develop I promise! It's easy to do: go to Dashboard, Edit Profile, and check "Show My Email Address".
Also, for those of us with security issues, let us comment when you post: go to Settings, Comments, and then check "Pop-up Window"... I promise lots of people {including me} will start leaving you more comments.

Charming...and Stylish Details

Last night, I continued the "winter cleaning" as I am calling it, because let's face it, due to inclement weather, I am stuck at home most of the evenings and I am trying to accomplish anything other than watching mindless TV... I decided to go through my stack of old magazines and organize what I want to keep, what I want to recycle, and what I want to toss.
Southern Living has some of my favorite recipes, so I simply cut them out and am going to buy a fun binder to keep all of them in for easy reference! This will make finding new favorites so much easier than having to skim through old issues...
While I was cutting out decorating ideas and all the holiday tablescapes, I stumbled upon an article that I thought was perfect to share on my blog... cleverly entitled "How to Write a Charming Thank-You Note" {via September 2010 issue}. In this day and age, so many people forget to write handwritten notes and I thought I would take a moment to mention a few specifics to make it easier, and more fun:
1. Start with the date and salutation: Send your note, written in black ink, within a week of receiving a gift. P.S. If you pass the 1 week mark, don't stress it--etiquette is actually 2 weeks so they'll forgive you once they open that beautiful note anyways =)
2. Say thanks right off the bat: Be specific about why you are writing the note. If you’re thanking someone for a monetary gift, refer to their “generosity” rather than mentioning the amount.
3. Compliment the kind gesture: Don’t be afraid to go over the top—everyone loves an effusive compliment, as long as it’s heartfelt.
4. Allude to the future: Anticipate another get-together, or if you’re writing about a gift, be sure to tell them how you plan to use it.
5. Finish with sincere regards: Reiterate your gratitude, then close the letter on an intimate note, signing your first and last name. Don’t forget to proofread before you postmark! {We all have a final touch we like to add--mine for instance is "Best" because it can be sent to a number of people in a lot of different circumstances...not too personal, not too formal, but use a salutation that works for you}

And I wanted to send a special thank you to both blogging friends Teaching in Heels as well as M at I Made My Bed for passing on the "Stylish Blogger Award" to me...I have my days where I don't believe I am stylish whatsoever, but that is so sweet of both of you--so then I have to share 7 stylish things about myself/my philosophies/etc...
1. I love to mix brown and black together--yes, I know, some people would never do this, but mixing neutrals together works well {in my opinion} and it offers some contrast--throw some gray in there, and you're golden in my book!
2. Fashion icons I adore include Reese Witherspoon, Jessica Alba, and Jennifer Aniston...classic and tailored, yet refined and hip...they aren't afraid to throw in color either, which I heart!
3. If I could switch places with one person in the fashion industry for one single day, I would most certainly choose Anna Wintour--yes, she is the woman from "The Devil Wears Prada", but that woman has the fashion world at her fingertips and I would die if I were able to play dress up for a day from the infamous Vogue closet.
4. My favorite thing to wear--which will come as no surprise to most of you--are dresses... they're feminine, fun, show off your figure, yet can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion...not to mention they are the most comfortable garments to me. In going through my closet recently, I had to count them and I had more than 100...yes, I know, a bit ridic...
5. If you're wanting new highlooks at a fraction of the cost, subscribe to Rue La La, HauteLook, Gilt, Ideeli, and any other fashion feature website. You can get this season's look for up to 50% off which helps our money go a little farther...
6. I am obsessed with fingernail polish... if I have nothing on my fingers, I feel naked... it always helps you look "complete" in my eyes, especially when people see your hands all the time--give me some OPI You Don't Know Jacques or Pinking of You and I am all set.
7. And most of all... have fun! Shop around your closet for fun mix and matching pieces--you don't always have to look "matchy matchy"... brighten your wardrobe with fun accessories {jewelry, scarves, purses} that don't break the bank, but still incorporate current looks with timeless pieces

Training Tuesday...Tips & Tricks from Moi

Back for round #2 on this Tuesday to share some of my secrets—a few tidbits of advice I have learned through my often tumultuous love of everything health and fitness...and please note to self, these things are specific tips and tricks that work for ME, meaning use with caution and remember to pay attention to what your body is telling you to do!
1. Use the scale to your advantage... unlike some people, I tend to argue that you should weigh yourself everyday. If you have a goal in which you're trying to accomplish, this is the way to track even if you've gained a pesky pound or two--however, keep in mind your actual weight can fluctutate throughout the day so take note!
2. Find your “happy weight”--check out this quiz... for me, my happy range is between 113 and 118 and I always know what I need to do to get back to business if I indulge in a few too many treats
3. Do in moderation... and yes, I most certainly believe this 100%--yes, you can have that cocktail, but cut back elsewhere--skip the steak and opt for fresh fish and a small salad--you shouldn't deprive yourself from something if you REALLY want it, but make sure you increase your activity or elminate something else to hold yourself accountable and not go overboard

4. Choose a goal and stick to it--have an important event coming up? a bikini you're wanting to fit in? aelect a goal that you think you can meet and do what it takes to get there! sometimes, it's better to choose smaller goals and then increase as you meet them... it's said that when you meet a goal you're apt to continue because you've seen just what you can do! don't sell yourself short

5. Surround yourself with positivity--if you're happy, you'll exude happiness, you'll be more likely to keep your body in check, and life will be all the more fun! have people in your life that bring you down? let them know that their negativity can influence people around them, or if you don't feel comfortable talking with them, simply cut back on your time spent with them
"life is too short to be anything but happy"

6. Eat 4 to 5 small meals a day… keeps your metabolism at top speed, burning the products you put into it and helps keep you going!! I have found that I do better when I have my larger meals at breakfast and lunch--and that mid-afternoon snack is a must in my book!
7. Write down what you eat—keep a food journal like the one posted here. This will help you keep track of calories consumed, number of glasses of water you drink each day, etc—this can really show you just how much that Ben and Jerry’s can backfire if you’re trying to lose weight

8. If you can’t make it to the gym, try a DVD... I've said it before and I'll say it again, that Jillian Michaels knows her stuff--The Shred is one of my favorite DVDs when I can't make it to the YMCA and you'll still feel the burn {today AND tomorrow!}
9. Don’t do it for anyone but yourself!

10. Don’t burn yourself with the same routine… switch it up! Go to a Pure Barre class, take a fun dance class with your girlfriends, take your honey on a weekend hike—if you do the same exercises each and every day, your muscles will adapt and you’ll be doing yourself a major injustice so get out there and use what God gave you!!

What are your favorite tips and tricks you've mastered and want to share??

12 Days of Christmas and Top 2 Tuesday

Rather than the traditional listing of "My Favorite Things" about the holiday season {and yes I love that song!}, today Aly is asking everyone to think about:
Day 8: Least Favorite Thing About the Holidays
Gaining weight
It's actually a myth that we gain anywhere from 5 to 7 pounds during the winter holidays, however, it is said that we do tend to gain at least 1 pound each year and over a 5 year span, BINGO--that adds up to a whopping 5 pounds! Interesting huh? I despise gaining weight during the holidays, and I vow to myself now to gain weight this year... yes, I will be diving into the desserts and treats, but all in moderation--the wedding isn't too far away and I will not stress myself out!
Having to take down all the décor after it’s all said and done
Does anyone else out there get that seasonal depression after Christmas is over? Once the decor is all down, does your house feel as empty as mine does? Something about knowing I have to wait another year to get all my trees out and the house smelling like mistletoe makes me one sad girl. But cheers to spending NYE in the mountains with my favorites so that'll make it a lot easier on me this year!
And I am on the roll to another one of my favorite bloggers, Taylor at The Undomestic Momma, who is blogging about her Top 2 Tuesday today which is all about cleaning and organization...she has got her labeling system down pat, whereas I am still in the learning process. I do, however, have a few tips and tricks up my sleeve:
1. Colored Rubbermaid Bins--if you own an older house like we do, you know storage can be an issue. Which is why we jumped on the bandwagon and bought colored bins so we know what is in each storage tote... green and red for Christmas, orange for Fall/Halloween decor, etc.  Not a genius trick, but it really helps me out when I am trying to look for a certain item.
2. As for any superb cleaning tricks, I am not sure I have mastered that one quite yet... Windex is my friend for everything and Febreeze does the trick when I need something "freshened up". And I love to light candles all throughout the house although that doesn't really pertain to cleaning so much. Sorry I can't be of much help in this area =(
