What I'm Cooking This Year...

Growing up, I rememeber helping my Mom prepare Thanksgiving dishes to bring to my Grandparent's house and how we would spend so much time in the kitchen, making sure each dish was prepared perfectly...afterall, turkey day is a lot about the food, am I right?
Even now, I am just like her in that I agonize over each and every detail of what I make, as food=love. This year, the dishes I am making are a little different than usual since we'll be in Hilton Head, though I just have to make some of my most treasured favorites so that it'll feel like home. Here are the items on my to-do list for tomorrow night and Thursday morning:
**this time, I'll be using pumpkin butter and pecans instead of preserves
Sweet Potato Casserole {my family's famous recipe}
Autumn Chopped Salad {via Espresso and Cream}
German Chocolate Heath Bar Cake {via Cookbook Jungle}
And because you all love to hate me when I post the infamous "Eat This, Not That" series, I read that the average person consumes more than 4,500 calolries and 229 grams of fat on Thanksgiving...obviously the "fattest day of the year" by a landslide. However, check out these quick switches to help keep yourself on track during turkey day! Enjoy your time with family and friends ;)

The Best and Worst...Halloween Candy

I know, you so don’t want to hear that the average person consumes a whopping 24 pounds of candy a year, right? Sad to say, but it’s the truth. I found this article, via Eat This, Not That, and just had to share…I know, the health nut in me is coming back!

{P.S. if you’re known to dig into the Halloween bowl multiple times, you may want to forego reading the rest—don’t say I didn’t warn you!!}
Fun Size Candy Bars
Worst: Butterfinger (100 calories, 4 grams fat)
Best: 3 Musketeers Fun Size (63 calories, 2 grams fat)

Classic Fruit Candy
Worst: Airheads—3 minis (140 calories, 1.5 grams fat)
Best: Dum Dum Pops—3 pops (77 calories, 0 grams fat)

Miniature Candy Bars
Worst: Twix—3 pieces (150 calories, 8 grams fat)
Best: Tootsie Roll—3 pieces (70 calories, 1.5 grams fat)

Chewy Candy
Worst: Brach’s Milk Maid Caramels—4 pieces (160 calories, 4.5 grams fat)
Best: Now and Later—4 pieces (53 calories, 0.5 grams fat)

Seasonally Themed Candy
Worst: Reese’s Pumpkin (170 calories, 10 grams fat)
Best: Candy Corn—11 pieces (70 calories, 0 grams fat)
What's sad is that some of my favorite little treats are on this list...goodbye Twix and Reese's--our renezvous are going to have to occur a lot less often. However, I promise NOT to be the lady who gives away apples and fruit snacks to the trick-or-treaters--a little splurge never hurt anybody ;)
So, what's your favorite go-to for Halloween candy?

The Dreaded Diet

Normally, I pretty much eat what I want...in moderation. Coupled with 3 to 4 days of exercise and portion control, I'm on a fairly routine food plan, but can incorporate a few indulgences every now and then since I know what my "happy weight" fluctuates around.
However, 2 weeks from today=bridal portraits, which means this girl is going on a very strict... dare I say d-i-e-t
Please tell me there are others of you out there who despise that word...ugh, such a nasty connotation. We'll just say I want to look my best for the pictures and that we're "cutting back a bit". So needless to say, I have to watch myself and this is "the plan" I came up with:
Exercise
  • 9 to 12 miles per week on the treadmill/outside running/arc trainer
  • 2 to 3 days of strength training and weights
Food/Drink
  • Cocktails: only one day per week {2 drinks}
  • 8 to 10 glasses of water per day to keep hydrated and skin looking refreshed
  • No eating after 7:30PM
  • No dessert {and yes, fro-yo counts as dessert--boo}
Beauty Regime
  • Tanning bed: first let me say I cannot wait to go back to spray tanning after the wedding...but this needs to happen to make sure I am not a casper bride
  • Whitestrips: yes, I will be using these to keep my pearly whites bright!
  • Nightly: using moisturizer and eye cream every night to reduce wrinkles and keep skin clean and breakout free
So tell me, what did you do to get glam and gorgeous for your big wedding extravaganza?? If there is anything I am missing or not thinking about, by all means let me know!

And one other question--I have had people look at me crazy when I told them about bridal portraits...is this just a southern thing? I have friends all over and in talking to them about having them taken so we can display a portrait at the wedding, it was almost as though I was speaking another language...

Workouts, Good Foods, and Beauty Matters--Oh My!

The older I get, the more I have learned to appreciate the body God gave me--yet on the other hand--I understand how to take better care of myself and really get back-to-basics when it comes to my diet, nutrition, workouts, etc. I am always searching the web for helpful tips and reminders on how to stay on track and reading the latest issue of Fitness on the plane last night gave me some VERY helpful information to share:
1. The Fitness Healthy Food Awards--every year, the mag seeks the help of countless participants to help find the "best food" in each category: snacks, treats, drinks, frozen meals, etc... you can read the results for each here!!
2. I'm sure you all know by now that it's MUCH better to eat 5 small plates a day rather than 3 large sit-down and gorge-yourself meals--though that is ideal to keep your metabolism up and running, we all know sometimes that is unattainable for whatever reason--travel, time, etc, but Fitness published a list of the 5 essentials for healthy snacking and I thought this was great:
a) Disease Fighters: Fruits and Veggies: Munch on blueberries, apples, peppers, and spinach, which are linked to a reduced risk of heart disease and certain cancers. Plus, the potassium, magnesium, and calcium in most fresh produce may help lower blood pressure.
b) Heart Helpers: Dark Chocolate: Both regular and sugar-free dark chocolate decrease blood pressure in overweight adults, according to new research. Consuming just a small amount of flavanol-rich cocoa powder daily can increase blood flow to your skin, making it softer, smoother, and more resistant to sun damage.
c) Energy Boosters: Whole Grains: Good news for carb lovers: You need at least 130 grams a day to keep your memory and concentration sharp. Opt for the whole-grain kind -- it's higher in fiber, giving you energy with staying power.
d) Bone Builders: Low-Fat Dairy: Just 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day can help you maintain bone mass when trying to lose weight. Including dairy, such as skim milk, in a low-calorie diet can help you shed belly fat.
e) Belly Shrinkers: Nuts: Snacking on nuts may help you shed pounds. Researchers found that people who ate almonds as part of a low-calorie diet for six months lost 18 percent of their body weight -- slimming their waistlines and reducing body fat to boot.

Summer Style Hair--are you like me during the summer, always trying to find ways to wear your hair differently to avoid the stress of the heat and humidity on your tresses?? More and more, I am wearing my hair au-natural with my naturally wavyness so I don't have to dry and straighten each morning. You could just say I'm going for the "just-got-out-of-bed-and-stuck-my-head-out-of-the-car-window" look... it may not be professional looking persay, but it's 90 degrees outside and any reason to look like I've been at the beach instead of stuck in corporate America is A-OK with me =)
To get the look, I towel dry my hair after the shower (after using some heavy duty conditioner), put a touch of curling mousse/gel into the middle and ends of my hair, and voila--done!

And as of yesterday, {I get to brag on myself a bit here} I have ran 301.2 miles this year! I never thought mid-way through the year I'd be at that mark... my goal is to get to 600 before 2011 so I'll keep on trekking to meet it!! WOO HOO

No Wedding Wednesday post this week friends... although today is the day... engagement picture day! It's hot and humid, but no rain so we get to have a fun night taking pics with our amazing photogs--can't wait!!
