I get MAJOR anxiety when it comes to planning our attire for family pictures... there, I said it, and I have a feeling I am not alone. I have Sugar Bit customers asking me to help "style" them and their kiddos all the time, yet when it comes to our family foursome, I get nervous and definitely overthink the entire situation.
Luckily for me, we are working with the amazingly talented Michelle Grace this year for our holiday photos and she has gone above and beyond to help me select the perfect ensembles for each of us.
We are actually going all out this year and I'm having a hair and makeup artist come out to get the girls and I "glammed up" before our pictures so that we can have some pampering and special girl time together! I know they will be THRILLED and I can't lie... not having to fix my hair and makeup will make for a relaxing afternoon. I think we might have to have a fancy family dinner outing that night since we will be looking our best.
Today, I'm here to offer helpful advice when it comes to planning for pictures:
[note: some editorial verbiage obtained from Michelle Grace and used with permission]

What Should You Wear?
You will see in the photo collage above that each main color is in the same color-family, but with added pops of pattern, texture, etc for interest. For our pictures, I usually select one "color" and then integrate that tone into each of our outfits in one way or another, so that the look is cohesive without being "matchy matchy" that people seem to gravitate to in portraits.
Here's a little sneak peak of what I have combined for us this year:

Just a few additional details you may want to think about before your big photo day:
++ Fit Your Form: Fitted clothing that shows your shape works best; skip that loose fitting top that won't work well in photographs
++ Consider Necklines: Mixing up necklines adds variety to shots and off the shoulder and sweetheart are always a good idea... just make it more interesting than a crew neck
++ Think Texture: Rich, luxurious fabrics photograph beautifully... chiffon, lace, beadwork, and embroidery make great statements, but be careful and try to avoid large graphic prints as they tend to distract
++ Accessorize: Be sure to bring classic accessories to accentuate your outfit on photo day... timeless scarves, hair accessories, and baubles add interest and help complete an outfit

Have Fun!
Remember to relax, be confident, and most importantly, have fun... a family photograph is a WONDERFUL thing and it's a keepsake you can always treasure. They make incredible gifts for your loved ones.
