Good Reads This Year

Tuesday, December 16, 2014

Can you believe it? A post that doesn't involve something to do with the holidays and/or Christmas!! In 2014, I made a goal to start reading more...to turn off the nightly TV shows a bit earlier in exchange for some quality time with my eyes in a book and I am happy to say I was able to meet my goal and then some! Looking for a new read? Maybe some of these will suit your fancy...I loved all of them and I'd recommend each for some good R&R with yourself :)
To Kill a Mockingbird... a classic, and one that I'm sad to say took me too long to realize I needed to read. If you've yet to read this one, buy it now! It is amazing for so many reasons and shows just how far we have come as a society in a fairly short amount of time...a hopeful read for sure.
The Husband's Secret...a chick lit book, but on another level. More suspenseful and engaging and I was hooked from beginning to end. Love this author and I plan to read more of her fiction soon!
Sharp Objects...I'm a HUGE fan of Gillian Flynn (author of Gone Girl) and this book added to my liking. Yes, her books are definitely "dark", but it's a different kind of read than what I typically subject myself to, so it's good to switch it up. If they make this one into a movie, I'm kinda scared to see how that measures up to the Gone Girl adaptation.
Moms on Call Toddler Version... Children saviors are what these ladies should be known as, for I don't think I would've survived the last 2.5 years without their resources and books. This year, with two toddlers to keep track of, I made sure to dive in to this one so I could be on top of my game in trying to wrangle/discipline/feed/and teach the girls as much as possible. I LOVE MOC.
The Fault in Our Stars...Get this tissue boxes out for this emotional rollercoaster ride. I still have yet to see the movie, but I loved the book and it was a quick read for me. I'm not a sappy person, but this will move anyone to get emotional about their loved ones.
The One and Only... another one of my favorite chick lit authors (Emily Giffin) wrote this page turner. It was good, not her best, but still a fun read perfect for a lazy day or when you're on vacation and want a fun book to pass the time.
Ladies Night... a true girly read in every sense of the word, and I have to say Mary Kay Andrews never disappoints. If I am looking for a lighthearted read that I know I will enjoy, I usually turn to her. Other favorites from her line-up include Summer Rental, Spring Fever, and The Fixer Upper.

What's next you ask?? Coming up on my latest books to read include the following: Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty, Dark Places by Gillian Flynn, Save the Date by Mary Kay Andrews, and Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller

  3. I'm glad to hear that you liked "The Husband's Secret," because I really want to read that book. I've also read "Sharp Objects." Have you read her other book "Dark Places?" They are turning that one into a movie. I'm sure that "Sharp Objects" will eventually get turned into a movie as well. *erica*

  17. Awesome! Thanks for the recommendations! I'm always looking for a good book. I love Emily Griffin but I would agree that 'The One & Only' wasn't her best book! I added 'The Husband's Secret' to my list after seeing it in one of your Instagram photos and really liked it! Gone girl was incredible. It was nice reading a book that wasn't completely predictable and I was wondering if her other books are similar in style. It looks like we have similar taste in books so I'll be adding Sharp Objects to my list! It looks like I will need to check out some Mary Kay Andrews books too! :)

  18. I think I'm the only person out there that hated Gone Girl and The Fault is in Our Stars. I just thought they were awful.

  21. Ooh! It's been so long that I've been able to indulge in a chick lit - didn't even realize Emily Giffin had a new(er) book out! I'll definitely be ordering that one for Kindle, and probably The Fault In Our Stars! I read an excerpt of Brooke's Shield's 'There Was A Little Girl' and it seemed fascinating and easy to read in short breaks.

  25. I am a huge reader and love diving into a good book too! I've read all but two of the books you mentioned and really enjoyed them all. Another author I've recently discovered (and devoured all her books) is JoJo Moyes. You need to read her book, Me Before You... simply amazing!

  27. Oh, thank you for posting this. I always love to see what people are reading.

I am currently reading The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. It's already been called a Must Read for 2015, and has been compared to Gone Girl. I'm about halfway through it, and have really enjoyed it. :)
